Climate Protection Award
USCMCL logoAccomplishments
On June 20, Mayor McLaughlin and the Village of Orland Park were honored with an Outstanding Achievement Award at the 76th Annual Meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors for climate protection. The village was recognized for the environmental benefits of using B-5 biodiesel fuel to power over 80 of Orland Park’s motorized vehicles and equipment. Since 2003, the village has purchased 55,000 gallons of B-5 fuel annually. “It is quite an honor to be recognized on the national level,” said Mayor McLaughlin, “the village continues to pursue improving the quality of life for our residents and I am humbled by this acknowledgement of our efforts. We have a great staff that works very hard on a daily basis to provide the very best to our residents.”

Orland Park has significantly reduced levels of hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, sulfur dioxide, and carbon dioxide emissions by using B-5 biodiesel fuel instead of traditional diesel fuel.

Award Criteria

In a pool of over 60 nationwide applicants, an independent panel of judges selected 18 cities for the awards based on: mayoral leadership, creativity and innovation, and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and/or improved quality of life in their community.
